UMC of Monroe fundraiser allows residents to safely shred old documents

A family unloads bins of unwanted documents at the United Methodist Church of Monroe's annual Paper Shredding fundraiser last year. This year's event will be at the Rite Aid on Main Street.

MONROE, CT — Families brought old documents, statements and other sensitive information they no longer need to the Village Square parking lot on Monroe Turnpike for safe disposal Saturday morning.

Volunteers from United Methodist Church of Monroe hosted their annual paper shredding fundraiser with ProShred Security from 9 a.m. to noon.

The volunteers set up orange cones and directed drivers to an area where they could unload their bins near a ProShred Security truck. There an employee shredded their documents.

The practice of shredding sensitive documents, rather than simply throwing it away, helps keep people safe from identity theft.
