MONROE, CT — Pushed by a fast Fairfield Prep squad in an out-of-conference clash on Friday, the host Masuk High boys swim team overshadowed a 95-80 loss with numerous best times and conference postseason qualifications.
The Panthers recorded 22 best times for repeat event swimmers, and a dozen others swam events for the first time, taking on 12 more to that tally. The Panthers had 10 swimmers qualify for the South-West Conference championships and/or state championships.
“We knew going into this meet that it was going to be a tough one. Prep is a powerhouse and they are fast. Fortunately for us, they are out of our league,” Masuk Coach Emily DeMace said.
“But it was a great opportunity to swim a new team and have another chance to swim for times. The boys did not go into tonight’s meet with a sour attitude,” DeMace added. “Prep swam fast, but sometimes that’s the extra boost you need to get moving. Everyone killed their times tonight. Sometimes places and points don’t matter. They have been working hard at practice and it paid off tonight.”
Masuk has two competitions remaining, as the Panthers will take on Brookfield and New Fairfield before the start of the postseason. Heading into the final two meets, the Panthers have 16 SWC qualifiers and six state trials qualifiers. Masuk has 15 other swimmers in at least one event one event that are close to postseason qualification as the season reaches the stretch run.
