MONROE, CT — A town-owned vehicle reported stolen from outside the Monroe Senior Center, 235 Cutlers Farm Road, Friday, was recovered at a shopping mall in Marlborough, Mass., over the weekend.
Video showed the silver 2010 Ford Crown Victoria with an estimated value of $6,500 was taken at 9:15 p.m. on Thursday.
A discarded Garmin GPS was found close to the area where the theft took place, but a flip phone left inside the vehicle was still not recovered at the time, according to police.
On Saturday, the Marlborough Police Department found the car abandoned in front of a JCPenney on Donald Lynch Boulevard. The rear tires were reportedly burned out from doing donuts and the flip phone was still inside the car.
Monroe police detectives are investigating the case.
Bounced check leads to arrest
Wilton police picked up a Greenwich woman on a Monroe warrant Saturday afternoon, stemming from a $3,367 check that had bounced.
Cynthia Williams, 44, was charged with third-degree larceny and issuing a bad check, then released on $5,000 bond for a Dec. 2 court date.
On Oct. 15, Monroe police received a bad check complaint from the owner of Start Moving LLC in Monroe, who said Williams hired his company to move furniture out of her rental home on July 12.
The moving company sent a $3,367 invoice after the work was done, and continued to inquire about payment before Williams made out a check for the entire amount at the end of August, according to police.
However, when the owner tried to deposit the check, he told police it bounced due to insufficient funds.
In September, he sent a certified letter to Williams, notifying her of the insufficient funds, but she allegedly failed to respond, according to the report.
Investigators spoke to Williams to get her side of the story, before applying for an arrest warrant. On Saturday, Monroe officers picked her up at the Wilton Police Department and later processed her at their headquarters.
Three-vehicle-crash on 25
A 47-year-old Wallingford man told officers he may have fallen asleep at the wheel of his red 2012 Ford Focus Saturday afternoon, before causing a three-vehicle-crash on Main Street (Route 25), just south of Brook Street.
All three drivers were evaluated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel and declined trips to a hospital.
The Wallingford driver was issued an infraction for failure to drive in the proper lane and his Ford Focus was towed due to disabling damage.
At approximately 2:35 p.m., police said the man was heading north on Route 25, when his vehicle crossed over the double yellow center line, drifting into the south bound lane and colliding with the front end of a black 2014 Toyota Tundra.
The driver told officers he did not realize what had happened, adding it is possible he had fallen asleep.
The 50-year-old Bridgeport man driving the Tundra told officers he was heading south on Main Street when he saw the Ford Focus hit a guardrail, before crossing over the double yellow center line and colliding with the front end of his vehicle.
The Bridgeport man said he tried to avoid the collision, but he had nowhere to go. Upon impact, police said his pickup truck struck a guardrail and crashed into the front end of a white 2010 Nissan Murano that was being driven behind the Ford Focus.
The 66-year-old Newtown man, who was driving the Nissan, told officers he could not avoid the collision. He and eyewitnesses confirmed the other accounts of the accident.
All three vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.
