MONROE, CT — Masuk High School’s two National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalists and five Commended National Merit students were honored during a ceremony at the Board of Education meeting in the Masuk media center Tuesday night.
Superintendent Joseph Kobza and Chairman David Ferris presented the students with certificates in front of their family members, who proudly applauded them for their accomplishments.
Of the roughly 1.5 million entrants who take the PSAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, the 50,000 highest scorers qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship program, according to Masuk Principal Steven Swensen.
The Semi-Finalists are among the top 16,000 scorers across the country, usually in the top one-to-two percent of test takers in Connecticut.
This year’s Masuk Semi-Finalists are Shivani Anand and Sawyer Judge.
Swensen said Semi-Finalists can submit applications to be finalists and about half of the submissions will earn students National Merit Scholarships.
Among Masuk’s Commended students are:
- Ariq Rahman
- Evan Boyle
- Tyler Barringer
- Emma Hannum
- Laura Micu
Swensen said Commended Students are among the top five percent of scorers on the PSAT National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
“Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for the National Merit Scholarships, some of the students do become candidates for special scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses,” he said.
In addition to their PSAT scores, Swensen said candidates are evaluated by their abilities, skills and accomplishments, based upon academic recognition, academic records, written recommendations and essays.
