MONROE, CT — Police officers and a home health aide carried a disabled resident to safety and she was taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation by the Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service after a fire broke out in her unit on Rosewood Circle at Northbrook Condominiums around 6:35 p.m. Saturday.
“While conducting a search, firefighters located a cat and despite resuscitation attempts, unfortunately it perished from the smoke,” Monroe Fire Chief Kevin Catalano said Sunday. “Residents from adjoining units safely self evacuated.”
He said no firefighters were injured. Additional fire crews from Newtown and Trumbull assisted at the scene, while Shelton firefighters staffed Monroe in the event of another fire call.
“The fire was deemed unintentional and originated in the kitchen,” Catalano said. “We stress the importance of having working smoke alarms and quickly evacuating and not going back into the building.”
“We appreciate the group effort of all firefighters involved including our mutual aid partners, police officers, EMS, and our dispatchers, and the cooperation and concern from Northbrook Condo residents,” he said.
