New but familiar face for Masuk volleyball

MONROE, CT — Masuk High volleyball fans should be very familiar with the new head coach of the boys program. Daniel Nyitrai was Masuk’s assistant boys varsity coach last spring and is the current freshman girls volleyball coach.

“I’m very excited for this season and it’s going to take everyone to buy in and do their best to help the team accomplish their goals,” said Nyitrai, who also coached boys varsity volleyball at Newtown High School in the spring of 2023 and was the JV girls coach at Darien High School in the fall of 2023.

Masuk’s goals are “to get our edge back and make another deep run in the SWC and state tournaments,” he said.

Senior captains are Nathan Kurkoski (setter), Daniel Ferris (outside hitter), and Michael Majersky (outside hitter).

Other key players are liberos Andrew Oleyar and Nicholas Adams; middle hitters Mathias Aoaeh and Jaylen Africot; right side hitters Owen Lafond, Tyler Barringer, Gus Mandrozos and Riyaan Kothari; and defensive specialists Thomas Warner, Jack Hanna, Nick Carvajal and Sanjit Selvaraju.

Tough South-West Conference foes are Joel Barlow, Newtown, Pomperaug and Kolbe Cathedral. Out-of-conference teams Shelton, Cheshire, Darien and Stamford will also provide good tests. The season begins Saturday morning when St. Joseph of Trumbull visits at 11 a.m.
