MONROE, CT — The Monroe, CT Residents Facebook group is starting #MonroeSEEK, a scavenger hunt during which a generous benefactor will make donations to Monroe charities and nonprofits.
The game is inspired by the May scavenger hunt at Edith Wheeler Memorial Library’s children’s department in honor of Monroe’s Bicentennial with images of iconic historical locations. The Facebook group ramped it up, taking the fun outside in a game of #MonroeSEEK, so everyone can join the fun.
This fun, interactive benevolent community social activity bridges Monroe’s past and present. The game will begin Friday, Aug. 4, as the town continues to celebrate 200 years of Monroe’s history.
Over the next six weeks, organizers Barbara Fahr and Kate Goyette said they will roll out a geographically focused set of caches hidden at various Monroe historical, natural, iconic, food/business or otherwise categorized as “just for fun” locations.
Every week will feature a new set of clues for four-to-six locations, released on the Monroe, CT Residents Facebook group page.
How to play
1 – Visit each location and search for a cache hidden at that location. Organizers ask participants to be respectful when looking for the cache.
2 – Read the information sheet inside, then leave the sheet in the cache. It will be the same as what is posted in the Facebook group. As with Munzee, there will be a QR code to see the information as well. Put the cache back in the location in which you found it.
3 – Write down the letter from the cache to unscramble and form the word for the week. Please do not reveal the letters for the locations!
4 – Take a picture of you/your team in front of each location and post the week’s set of pictures to the Monroe, CT Residents’ group with the tag #MONROESEEK. Your post will count toward a donation that will be made by your participation to the charity of the week.
5 – After you visited all of the caches for that week and posted your photos, unscramble the letters to form the word of the week. Send a private message with the word to either Barbara Fahr or Kate Goyette to be entered into the weekly drawing.
Please do not share the word with others, comment or display it in your post.
6 – In standard geocaching style, inside the cache will be some trinkets to trade. Feel free to bring a trinket, if you would like to trade it with an item in the cache. This step is optional.
At the end of six weeks, players who have successfully collected all six words and shared their posts to the Monroe, CT Residents’ group page will be eligible for the grand prize drawing. Participants will be tracked using a publicly accessible Google Sheet that will also track the donation total.
The Monroe, CT Residents group community is working with a generous, anonymous benefactor who will make a $5 donation per post to a highlighted Monroe charity of the week, based on players’ weekly participation. The amount will be shared as it grows.
Highlighted Charities include:
- The Monroe Historical Society
- The three volunteer fire departments
- Save Our Stepney
- Masuk Robotics
- Monroe Farmers’ Market
- Friends of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library
A big thank you to the featured locations for their participation in MonroeSEEK! A special thank you also to Monroe Historical Society for allowing us to use some of the verbiage and images from their books (Monroe Through Time, Monroe Through Time II, and Images of America: Monroe).
