Monroe’s Night at the Park, a porch pirate, threat by concealed cellphone

MONROE, CT — A rainy forecast led to the postponement of the Monroe Police Department’s annual Monroe Night at the Park, a free annual community event. The new date is Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 5 to 9 p.m.

Monroe’s Night at the Park is the town’s version of the annual National Night Out. The community-building campaign gives the public the opportunity to meet members of the Monroe Police Department in a fun, informal atmosphere.

The free event offers fun activities for the whole family to enjoy, along with tips and information to build a safer and healthier Monroe. Children will have goodies to take home, as well as educational material for families.

A highlight of the evening is the landing of a Sikorsky S76 helicopter at 5:30 or 6 p.m.

Police want to thank Spadaccino and Leo P. Gallagher and Son Community Funeral Home, as well as the other businesses who sponsored the event.

Porch thief

A Teller Road resident reported the theft of a package from her front steps containing $400 worth of merchandise July 26.

At 3:10 p.m., she told police a suspect in a small, red two-door sports car with tinted windows drove up her street, then another suspect, a young male with long bushy hair, wearing a medical mask, got out, ran up to her steps and stole the package.

When the thief got back into the car, the driver took off toward Purdy Hill Road, police said.

The Monroe Detective Division is investigating the case.

Alleged threat by cellphone

A 20-year-old Monroe man was arrested on a warrant July 28, charging him with first-degree threatening and breach of peace for an incident at Noble gas station, 195 Monroe Turnpike, on July 5.

On July 5, just after 11 p.m., a convenience store employee told police the man threatened him with a possible firearm concealed a McDonald’s paper bag, one night after he had refused to sell him tobacco products, because he is under age 21.

The man allegedly said, “what happened last night? What happened last night?”

Police said the employee recognized the customer, got a description of his vehicle, and the incident was caught by video surveillance.

When police later spoke to the man, who lives in a residence on Monroe Turnpike, he reportedly told officers he had a cellphone inside the paper bag, not a gun.

He was released after posting $10,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 2.
