MONROE, CT — Hackers struck again, disrupting the Zoom portion of the Town Council meeting Monday night after Zoom-bombing last week’s budget hearing.
At the start of Monday’s Town Council meeting, the cartoon image of a man wearing a ski mask, smoking a cigarette, appeared in a guest window. The name under the image was “Nuke Hubert Gamer.” The character appeared moments before the hacking incident.
Town officials cut the feed before any disturbing images could get rolling.
Last week, during the Board of Finance’s budget hearing on Thursday, March 20, a high-pitched voice spouting crude and racist language sounded in the Zoom feed, followed by pornographic images taking over the screen.
Earlier Monday, police told The Sun the town’s IT Department investigated the March 20 incident, tracking the IP address to an account originating in Germany. Then the case was turned over to the Monroe Police Detective Division for further investigation.
Shoplifting Ensure, Hot Pockets …
A 35-year-old Waterbury woman was charged for allegedly stealing $355 worth of groceries from Stop & Shop, 470 Monroe Turnpike, Friday night.
Store security called police to report a shoplifting in progress just before 8 p.m. The suspect allegedly used a blanket to conceal many beverages, especially Ensure, and Hot Pockets among the random 22 items taken, according to the report.
She was confronted by store security, then stopped by officers in the parking lot.
The woman was charged sixth-degree larceny and released after posting $1,000 bond for a March 28 court date.
Police investigate fraudulent vehicle loan
A 73-year-old Moose Hill Road man told officers he believes someone stole his Social Security number to fraudulently use his name as the co-signer on a loan to buy a 2013 Honda CRV, according to a police complaint filed on March 18.
He learned about the fraud after Capital One Auto Finance sent him a letter informing him that he broke the agreement, so the company planned to sell the Honda.
The same letter mentioned the name of the man’s former health aide as the person who owes the money under the agreement, police said. The victim told officers the woman had worked for him as a visiting health aide in 2022.
The man contacted the Capital One Law Enforcement Investigation Team about the incident and its representatives are looking into the matter.
Police said officers spoke with the former health aide and the case remains under investigation.
