Monroe Police: Three vehicle crash sends a Volkswagen Jetta into a utility pole

MONROE, CT — Three drivers escaped injury Feb. 24, after a gray 2011 Volkswagen Jetta crashed into a gray 2015 Ford Explorer in the intersection of Elm Street and Cross Hill Road. The impact sent the Explorer into a red 2010 Subaru Outback waiting at a stop sign, then into a utility pole, according to police.

Police said the accident was caused by a 17-year-old Monroe male blowing through a stop sign around 8:41 a.m., while heading west on Cross Hill in the Volkswagen Jetta. He was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel arrived to evaluate him and the other two drivers, a 62-year-old Monroe woman, who was driving the Ford Explorer south on Elm Street, and a Stamford man, 39, who was stopped at the stop sign facing north on Elm Street in his Subaru Outback.

Police said all declined a trip to a hospital. All three vehicles were towed due to disabling damage.

  1. I am so glad that no one was seriously injured. This crash sounds it was caused by what I have come to call a MonRoll. Just roll through a stop sign and let the other drivers watch out for you. It seems that people of all ages no longer feel that they need to stop at stop signs, thus leading to crashes like the February 24th crash. I think that we have all forgotten that a stop sign isn’t,a suggestion to stop, but rather a requirement to stop before proceeding. Again, I am so grateful that there were no serious injuries, but maybe we can all remember to stop at a stop sign.
