MONROE, CT — A 71-year-old Monroe man told police a $49,306 business check he wrote out to a towing company on Oct. 7 never made it to the vendor, and was instead endorsed to another company and fraudulently cashed, according to a complaint filed Friday.
The towing company contacted him to say it did not receive the check and his bank statement showed the check was cleared, so he called Chase Bank and learned the check had been endorsed to a company called Plush Credit LLC.
The man was refunded his money and police and the bank are investigating.
The victim told police his business either hands its mail directly to a mail carrier or puts it in a Post Office box, adding he never mails checks out from his home mailbox.
Unemployment scams
On Friday a 34-year-old Monroe woman told police someone fraudulently filed for unemployment benefits from the Connecticut Department of Labor in her name.
She had no financial loss but was advised to notify the Department of Labor, Social Security and all of her personal financial institutions.
On Saturday, a 53-year-old Monroe man said his employer told him an unemployment claim was fraudulently filed with the Department of Labor on his behalf.
No financial loss was reported, but he was advised to contact the Department of Labor with the police report case number.
Possible mail theft
A Greisers Road woman told officers she saw two occupants in a black vehicle open and go through mail at 1:30 p.m. Friday, but officers were unable to locate the suspicious vehicle, according to police.
Stolen Red Bull
A white man in a blue sweatshirt and blue baseball cap stole 11 cases of Red Bull energy drink from Stop & Shop, 470 Monroe Turnpike, early Saturday morning and left the store without paying. Police said he headed north on Route 111 in a silver Honda Accord with no license plate.
The estimated value of the stolen Red Bull was $270, according to the report. The theft occurred around 7:46 a.m.
Violation of a protective order
A 21-year-old Old Tannery Road man was charged with two counts of second-degree violation of a protective order and possession of a firearm with altered identification markings after officers, with a warrant, conducted a search of his home on Nov. 10.
He was released on $250,000 bond for a Nov. 14 court date.
