Monroe Police Reports: Stolen vehicles, a scam, the Penguin Plunge is back

MONROE, CT — A 2019 BMW was reported stolen from a driveway in the 400-block of Hattertown Road Tuesday.

Police said a teenager noticed the vehicle was missing when she came home from school and reported her mothers’ BMW stolen.

Home surveillance video determined the theft occurred at 1:30 a.m. Police said it was unlocked and the keys were inside when it was taken.

Detectives are investigating the case.

A stolen backpack

A backpack was reported stolen after two unlocked vehicles were entered on Williamsburg Drive early Tuesday morning.

At approximately 7 p.m. on Tuesday, one of the victims went to get her husband’s backpack, when she noticed it was missing from the vehicle, police said, adding it contained his work phone and Apple AirPods.

The couple’s Ring camera showed someone entering their vehicles at 4:42 a.m.

Officers canvassed the area looking for evidence and surveillance footage. Then the matter was turned over to the Monroe Police Detective Division for further investigation.

Monroe woman loses $445 in scam

A 59-year-old William Henry Drive woman told police she was scammed out of close to $445, while trying to do business with Hertz Rent-A-Car over the phone on March 14.

Police said she found a phone number online and spoke to a man named “Jack,” who at one point in their conversation told her to buy a Visa debit card to complete the transaction. She bought a $444.86 gift card, then gave the information to Jack over the phone.

When he told her to buy another card for $250 to pay for the insurance, she became suspicious, the report said.

During the course of their conversation, police said the victim gave the man her name, driver’s license number and date of birth.

Police advised her to monitor her credit accounts and to notify the three major credit bureaus.

Stolen Honda HRV

A New Jersey woman told police her 2024 Honda HRV was stolen when she spent the night at a friend’s house on Swendsen Drive, according to a complaint filed on March 12.

The theft occurred sometime between 8 p.m. on March 11 and 5 a.m. on March 12, police said, adding the victim did not realize her Honda was missing until 2 p.m.

She had left her vehicle unlocked with the key inside, according to the report.

New Haven police find stolen Land Rover

New Haven police officers recovered a white 2018 Land Rover Discovery reported stolen from the Village Square parking lot, 401 Monroe Turnpike, in their city on Monday morning.

The vehicle was stolen from a 61-year-old Shelton woman on March 7. She told officers it was taken when she went out to lunch with a friend and left her unlocked vehicle at the shopping center.

The victim’s purse, which she had left inside the Land Rover, contained her keys, credit cards, driver’s license and cash, according to the report.

At around 12:15 p.m., the victim received a phone call from the Shelton Police Department asking if she had dumped the two child safety seats from her backseat and her license plates onto Howe Avenue in downtown Shelton.

At the time, she was unaware her vehicle was stolen. She called Monroe police to report the theft and canceled her credit cards.

The Penguin Plunge

The annual Plunge at the Park will be held at Great Hollow Lake on March 29. The fundraiser supporting Special Olympics Connecticut’s athletes is co-sponsored by the Monroe Police Department and Special Olympics Connecticut.

Registration will begin at 11 a.m. and The Plunge will start at 1 p.m. It costs $25 per participant and anyone who raises $150 or more will receive a Penguin Plunge hooded sweatshirt on the day of the event. To register, click here.

Aside from The Plunge, the event is a day of socializing and enjoying free food, including pizza, hot dogs and hamburgers.
