MONROE, CT — Police say a 39-year-old Danbury man involved in a two-vehicle-crash on June 19 had bloodshot eyes, the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on him, was incoherent and nearly fell asleep while talking to officers. A warrant for his medical records later showed his blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit, according to the report.
He was arrested by Danbury police on Nov. 23, then turned over to Monroe officers on their arrest warrant. He was charged with DUI and failure to drive in the proper lane and released on $500 bond for a Dec. 2 court date.
At approximately 947 a.m. on June 19, police said the man was driving north on Route 25 in his tan Toyota RAV4 when his vehicle crossed over the double yellow line and collided with a black Nissan Murano in the southbound lane in the 100-block of Main Street.
Both drivers were standing outside their vehicles when officers arrived.
A witness told officers she had been following the RAV4 since the Route 25 Connector and saw it drift into the other lane, into oncoming traffic.
Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel evaluated the Danbury man and he was taken to a hospital.
On Nov. 23, Danbury police arrested him and charged him with driving a motor vehicle under suspension and simple trespass before turning him over on the Monroe warrant.
Car reported stolen twice
Enterprise Rent-A-Car, 75 Main St. in Monroe, reported the theft of a 2024 Toyota Corolla on Monday after it was rented and not returned. Then officers interviewed the customer, who told them he could not return it, because the car was stolen from him in New Haven on Oct. 23.
Enterprise told Monroe officers the rental was from Oct. 21 to Nov. 3 and that they reached out to the customer about the car several times via phone and mail with no response.
The customer, a Trumbull man, told officers he had reported the car stolen to New Haven police on Oct. 23, and was going to report the theft to the Enterprise in New Haven, but it closed before New Haven officers left the crime scene, so he had never filed a report with the rental car business.
Monroe detectives are following up on the matter.
Reckless driving alleged
A 16-year-old Monroe male will be charged for reckless driving and evading responsibility after being involved in a motor vehicle accident on Millo Drive on Nov. 22.
At approximately 10:48 p.m., a homeowner on Millo Drive told officers he was driving west on Cross Hill Road and was turning left onto his street, when a Toyota Camry came up behind him at a high rate of speed and the driver tried to pass him on the left.
The driver of the Toyota reportedly swerved hard to his left to avoid a collision, ended up on the resident’s lawn and slid across the grass, eventually coming to a stop at the bottom of a hill in his yard.
The homeowner told police the driver, who is the 16-year-old juvenile, and his passenger got out of the Toyota and yelled at him, accusing him of being at fault. The passenger took off on foot and the driver drove away, police said, adding the resident got the license plate number of the vehicle.
Officers identified the driver and went to his address on Nov. 23. He was not home, however, the Toyota was there and had visible damage and dirt packed into the front bumper, according to police.
Later that day, the juvenile and his father came to police headquarters. Officers will apply for the charges, police said.
