MONROE, CT — Police say last Saturday’s fiery crash at the intersection of Purdy Hill and Teller roads was caused by a 64-year-old Trumbull man, who allegedly blew through a stop sign. A Good Samaritan helped the driver escape from his gray Honda Accord just before it became engulfed in flames.
On Monday, police said the driver was heading north on Teller Road around 7:14 p.m., when he went through the stop sign at the intersection and his car was struck on the rear quarter panel by a red Subaru Forester, whose driver was heading east on Purdy Hill Road.
The Accord went off the road, hitting a stonewall on a lawn in the 110-block of Purdy Hill Road before catching fire. Sean Wollenberg, who lives on Teller Road, said the Trumbull man was screaming as he tried to get out of the passenger side door of his damaged vehicle.
Wollenberg helped the man get out safely before police and firefighters arrived. Town firefighters extinguished the car fire and the brush fire it had caused.
The driver was treated by Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel at the scene and taken to Bridgeport Hospital for further evaluation of his injuries.
He reportedly told officers he “may have rolled through the stop sign,” according to police, who said the driver of the Subaru Forester, a 37-year-old Trumbull man, said he saw the Honda Accord accelerate through the stop sign and was unable to stop in time.
The driver of the Forester was not injured, police said.
The driver of the Honda was cited for failure to obey a stop sign, misuse of plates, driving an unregistered motor vehicle and driving without insurance.
Shoplifting at Rite Aid
A shoplifter stole $395 worth of grooming products from the Rite Aid pharmacy at 435 Main St. Friday morning, according to a complaint from the store manager.
Police said a White man with dark hair pulled into a bun, wearing a black shirt, black pants and black shoes stole the merchandise around 10:30 a.m.
He reportedly went to the store with reusable bags and filled them with nine items such as Braun shavers, a Conair flat iron, a Revlon hot airbrush and styler, and Conair men’s corded clippers, before leaving the store without paying.
The manager told officers the same suspect had also committed a theft at their Stratford store on Dec. 17 and turned over a photo of him to police.
The shoplifting incident is now being investigated by the Monroe Police Detective Division.
