MONROE, CT — A 41-year-old Monroe man was charged with DUI Monday night, after police responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle.
Officers arriving on the scene around 10:11 p.m. found a white Cadillac Escalade on Fan Hill Road, near Route 111, facing the town green and not moving. The headlights were on and the engine was running, police said.
The driver was still seated in the front seat and officers saw several small bottles of alcohol, full and empty, in plain view inside the SUV, police said.
When officers asked the driver his name, he allegedly gave them a fake one. Police said he appeared to be confused and disoriented and the odor of an alcoholic beverage emanated from his person.
As officers spoke to him, police said the driver took his foot off the brake and the vehicle began to roll away, so police were forced to intervene to stop the car, according to the report.
After officers got the driver out of vehicle, police said he gave them a false name again and refused to answer further questions. He was arrested and brought to headquarters.
When asked how much he had to drink, police said the man said, “a lot.”
He allegedly refused to participate in standard sobriety tests and during the booking process, police learned his driver’s license was suspended. He also refused to submit to a breath test, police said.
He was charged with DUI, operating with a suspended license and failure to maintain the proper lane. He was held overnight before posting $500 bond for a Jan. 14 court date.
‘Medical issue’ causes two crashes
Police seized an 81-year-old Monroe man’s driver’s license, because officers believe he poses a danger on the road after he was involved in a second accident, caused by a medical issue, on Barn Hill Road Monday evening.
At approximately 6:51 p.m., police said the man was heading south on Monroe Turnpike in a GMC Sierra, when he attempted a left turn onto Barn Hill Road and drove over the center island where he struck a rock, bounced off it, struck a curb on Barn Hill, crashed into someone’s stonewall in the 500-block, then drove over the lawn and into the driveway.
Witnesses at the scene told officers the man was driving erratically before the accident, according to the report.
Police said the driver told them he crashed and totaled his personal vehicle a month earlier, so the GMC Sierra was a rental vehicle.
The driver appeared to be suffering from a medical issue, so Monroe Volunteer Emergency Medical Service personnel assessed his condition and took him to a hospital, police said.
He was issued a ticket for failure to drive in the proper lane and the rental vehicle was towed.
Honda crashes into utility pole
A 20-year-old Stamford man told officers an animal ran in front of his 2012 Honda CRV as he drove east on Judd Road, toward Main Street, Monday afternoon, so he swerved to avoid a collision before going off the right side of the road and hitting a utility pole, which broke on impact, according to the report.
The driver, who was treated for minor injuries and declined a trip to a hospital, was issued a ticket for failure to drive in the proper lane and his vehicle was towed due to disabling damage.
Frontier was contacted to replace the pole.
The one-vehicle-crash occurred around 2:41 p.m.
Subaru hits 2 utility poles
A 17-year-old Monroe juvenile was issued an infraction for driving too fast for conditions Dec. 28, after the tan 2010 Subaru Legacy he was driving slid on ice as he headed west on Cutlers Farm Road, before hitting a pot hole, crossing the center line, side-swiping a utility pole, continuing west and slamming into a second pole.
The crash occurred just east of Pepper Street, around 4:51 a.m.
Police said the teen told officers he believes he rode over a patch of ice and lost control of the vehicle. He was evaluated by EMS personnel, but declined a trip to a hospital.
The damaged Subaru Legacy was towed due to disabling damage and Eversource was called to the scene to fix the utility poles. Police said the roadway was partially closed with alternating lanes of traffic during the repairs.
Tree falls on vehicles
A large tree came crashing down onto two parked vehicles on Rolling Ridge Road at the Northbrook condominium complex early Monday morning. A resident told police she heard a loud crash at 3:30 a.m., but it was dark outside, so she did not see the tree until she came out later in the morning.
Officers arrived to find a dead tree on top of a 2020 Jeep Wrangler and a 2009 Toyota RAV4. Both had heavy damage to the roof, windshield and front end, police said.
Both vehicles had to be towed and the owners, who live in the same unit, were advised to contact their insurance companies.
