Joey Nizzardo, of Monroe, came in first in Hartford HealthCare/St. Vincent’s Swim Across the Sound for the second year in a row. He dedicated his 15.5 miles to all his family members who have lost their lives to cancer and to his grandpa who is currently battling the disease.
Nizzardo’s time was six hours, 36 minutes and 56 seconds.
On Saturday, nearly 200 swimmers swam across Long Island Sound, protected by a fleet of 90 escort boats, perimeter boats, and law enforcement, fire, rescue and Coast Guard boats.
This year, Hartford HealthCare’s Swim Across the Sound raised over $380,000 dollars to benefit thousands of individuals battling cancer. The money raised funds programs and services as well as financial assistance to patients for items that are not covered by insurance.

Nice job Joey. I did the swim a few years as part of a relay team and know what a challenge that was. I admire for being able to swim that far by yourself in difficult conditions and WIN THE RACE!!! Fantastic!!! Congratulations!
