MONROE, CT – The Monroe Lions Club has been spreading holiday cheer in the town of Monroe for over three decades. This year, an event featuring live music from the band, Old School 203, held at Coals Norwalk raised $1,890 for individuals and families facing food insecurity in town.

Monroe Lions event chairs Anette Savastano and her sister Marisa Getts worked with Coals restaurant to make the event a success. The proceeds were donated to the Monroe Food Pantry.

The Lions also delivered pre-made Thanksgiving dinners from Jennie’s Restaurant in Monroe to the Food Pantry for families in need.

In addition to its fundraisers, Lions Club members participated in community events, including the Veterans Day ceremony at Stepney Green last November, when Lions Club President Frank Bent presented a wreath on behalf of the organization.

The 72-year-old civic organization has been honoring our veterans for decades. A few years ago, the Monroe Lions Club provided the funds to construct a memorial at this site, which included five tall flag poles — one for every branch of the service.

In December, the Monroe Lions Club continued its annual tradition of decorating Monroe Town Hall and Edith Wheeler Memorial Library with festive wreaths, as well as delivering food baskets to Monroe families in need.

The baskets were put together in a way to meet each family’s ages, food allergies and food preferences to name a few of the personal touches. The secret shoppers for the baskets received additional support from Big Y Supermarket in Monroe.

The Monroe Lions Club welcomes local men and women who are interested in giving back to their community to attend one of its semi-monthly meetings.
