MONROE, CT — Families enjoyed potato sack races on the green in front of Monroe Town Hall Friday afternoon, children made their own Super Spuds at the Market Minis table, Nick’s Catering had a baked potato bar and Carl Anthony’s made brick oven potato pizza, as the Monroe Farmers’ Market’s annual Tater Fest was in full swing.
The potato theme didn’t end there. The Drunk Alpaca sold flavored potato chips, Addeo’s Italian Ice had a sweet potato and marshmallow Italian ice, and Fifth State Distillery served a sweet potato and maple martini.
“The farmers submitted their own entries for Mr. Potato Head,” Kelly Plunkett, the market manager, said of the displays on the volunteer table for judging.
Super Spud, a farmers’ market mascot, walked around the green, high-fiving children, giving hugs, while posing for photos.
The Monroe Farmers’ Market has several events every year, including Pickle Fest and a celebration of National Farmers’ Market Week.
“All of our special events are agriculturally related,” Plunkett said. “Our events celebrate the veggies. It’s really about reminding people we’re here until Oct. 25. We pick up our marketing in the fall. This is the time when farmers are bursting at the seams with produce.”
Plunkett said local farmers still have produce left over from the summer to go with their fresh crops of fall vegetables like squash and zucchinis.
