Monroe detectives investigate a pair of burglaries

MONROE, CT — Detectives are still investigating two daytime burglaries reported at Highland Drive on Feb. 21.

At 2:40 p.m., a woman told officers she returned from shopping and noticed things were out of place in her condo unit. While she was examining the interior of her home, someone knocked on her door. It was a man asking if Erica was there, police said.

No one named Erica lives at that address. The homeowner saw the man drive off in a beat up gray car.

When she continued to look around her condo, she discovered that the screen for her bedroom window was lying on the ground outside the unit. She also noticed a piece of her jewelry lying on the mat near the front door, according to the report.

Detectives were called to the scene to process it for evidence and the victim started taking an inventory of her belongings to determine if anything was taken.

Later, in the day, around 4:53 p.m., police responded to a complaint from a neighboring unit. A woman told officers she arrived home from doing errands and noticed her condo was entered and a $100 security camera was stolen.

Several neighbors observed an older damaged gray sedan in the complex, police said, adding it appears entry was made through a window. Detectives are investigating.

DUI on Route 110

An 18-year-old Shelton man was charged with DUI following a traffic stop on Route 110 early Friday morning.

At approximately 12:56 a.m., a police officer observed a Volkswagen Jetta traveling on Monroe Turnpike (Route 111) at a high rate of speed, according to the report. Police said the officer attempted to catch up with vehicle, which was going well over the speed limit.

The officer caught up with the Jetta near the roundabout on Route 110 and saw the driver blow through a stop sign at the Moose Hill Road intersection, police said.

Police pulled over the vehicle on Route 110, near Wheeler Road.

The driver spoke with a slow speech, his eyes were glassy and he denied having had anything to drink, police said. Asked where he was coming from and where he was going to, police said the driver replied “home” to both questions.

His performance on field sobriety tests led to his arrest and he refused a breath test at headquarters, police said.

During the booking process, police said the teen admitted to having “only had three or four beers,” then later said he was drinking bourbon throughout the night.

Police said a three-quarters empty bottle of bourbon was found inside the car, along with a quarter empty bottle of wine.

The driver was charged with DUI, failure to obey a stop sign and possession of alcohol by a minor. He was released on $500 bond for a March 18 court date.

Breach of Peace

The manager of the CVS pharmacy at 511 Monroe Turnpike called police to report a black Toyota Tundra taking up multiple handicapped parking spaces without a placard just before 2 p.m. Saturday. Then the manager called 911 moments later when two customers got into a shouting match over it.

Officers spoke to one customer, a 60-year-old Shelton man, who said he was upset that someone parked in a handicapped spot without a visible marker.

He went into the store to find the driver, a 75-year-old Florida man, and got into the argument.

A police investigation found the Tundra was parked over the line, but wasn’t occupying multiple spaces and that the driver did have a handicapped placard, but it just wasn’t displayed.

The Shelton man was warned about his behavior and was asked to call police if he ever has a problem with a handicapped parking situation again, rather than taking matters into his own hands.
