Members of the Senior Pilgrim Fellowship, Monroe Congregational Church’s youth group, dedicated some of their summer to helping Crane Creek P.H. Church in Rock, West Virginia, painting exterior walls and a porch, and rebuilding its community garden.
During the mission trip, a smaller group of volunteers had also rebuilt a wheelchair ramp for a local resident, who lives up the road from the church.
“The goal of the mission trip is not only about helping different communities in need, but also growing ourselves,” said Olivia Malewicki, a member of the Senior Pilgrim Fellowship (PF).
This year’s mission trip included 16 current Senior PF members, ranging from high school freshmen to seniors, 10 returning college advisors and five adult advisors. The group stayed at the Appalachian South Folklife Center in Pipestem, W.Va., a nonprofit hosting service work programs for various college, church and civic groups,
After a year of weekly Sunday meetings, the group loaded up vans and embarked on their mission trip on July 20. The two-day journey included at stop at a church in Pennsylvania at the midway point.
“The best part about these trips is knowing that we are making a difference in the communities we are in,” said Senior PF President Owen Correll.
Past destinations include mission trips to Maine in 2023, Kentucky in 2022, and Maine again in 2021.
The West Virginia trip was Senior PF’s fourth time in the state. Joshua Post, the head adult advisor, said there was always something special about the West Virginia mission trips, which is why he was excited to bring the group there again this year.
