MONROE, CT — Girl Scouts selling cookies outside polling places is an Election Day tradition. Girls from two Fawn Hollow Elementary School troops set up shop at Monroe Elementary School Tuesday.

Friends’ Book Sale
Friends of Edith Wheeler Memorial Library will host its annual Book Sale in the Ehlers Room in the lower level of the library, 733 Monroe Turnpike, this Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Shoppers can browse a selection of books, DVDs, CDs, puzzles and more.
The nonprofit uses all proceeds to benefit Edith Wheeler Memorial Library and its programs.

Library of Things drive
Boy Scout Troop 63 will assist Edith Wheeler Memorial Library in collecting donations for its new Library of Things this Saturday, Nov. 9, from 10 a.m. until noon.
Donations will be collected by the back entrance of the library, 733 Monroe Turnpike.
A Library of Things consists of items you may not often need, that require considerable storage space, are expensive or otherwise are not an item around most homes. This will help patrons save money, save space and practice sustainability.

Edith Wheeler Memorial Library’s Author Talks Online will include “The Smithsonian National Gem Collection Unearthed Surprising Stories Behind the Jewels” by Jeffrey Edward Post, and “The Night We Lost Him” a novel by Laura Dave this December.

Grabovsky earns scholarships
BEREA, Ohio — Virginia Grabovsky of Monroe was among over 750 students who earned named scholarships at Baldwin Wallace University this fall.
Grabovsky, a graduate of Masuk High School majoring in music theory, earned the E.S. & M.R. Griffiths Scholarship, the Norman Webb Scholarship and the Willard & Donna Carmel Music Theatre Scholarship.
Monroe students join Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi
BATON ROUGE, La. — The following students were recently elected to membership into The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines:
Gabriella Luongo of Monroe at Fordham University
Stephen Winkel of Monroe at University of Rhode Island
They are among approximately 20,000 students, faculty, professional staff and alumni to be initiated into Phi Kappa Phi each year. Membership is by invitation only and requires nomination and approval by a chapter.
Only the top 10 percent of seniors and 7.5 percent of juniors are eligible for membership. Graduate students in the top 10 percent of the number of candidates for graduate degrees may also qualify, as do faculty, professional staff and alumni who have achieved scholarly distinction.

Comet over Monroe
Kim Cassia, who is well known as director of Monroe’s Community and Social Services and head of the Monroe Senior Center in town, took a photo of the comet, Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, aka Comet A3, which was visible over Connecticut last October.
Cassia’s photo was taken by the football field at Wolfe Park on Oct. 15 around 7:20 p.m.
According to Wikipedia, the comet from the Oort cloud was discovered by the Purple Mountain Observatory in China on January 9, 2023 and independently found by ATLAS South Africa on February 22, 2023.
