Masuk volleyball squad’s season begins with nonconference matches

Nate McCauley and the Panthers have high hopes for playoff success this spring.

MONROE, CT —Masuk High has a well-rounded boys volleyball team featuring good hitters, solid team defense and goals for postseason success, according to Coach Polo Castro. Masuk is striving for a return to the South-West Conference and state championship matches.

The season is getting underway with three straight road matches and four consecutive out-of-conference battles. Perennial powerhouse Joel Barlow stands to be the toughest competition in both the conference and the state, Castro anticipates.

Masuk is led by captains Nate McCauley, Owen J. Smith, Christian DaEira and Vichu Selvaraju, Daniel Ferris, Mathias Aoaeh and Nathan Kurkoski.

The Panthers’ season began with a 3-1 loss to a tough Trumbull squad on April 1. McCauley registered 25 kills, Ferris had 13 kills and Kurkoski racked up 41 assists for the Panthers.

Masuk bounced back with a 3-0 victory at Daniel Hand on April 4.

The Panthers visit Bridgeport Central Wednesday, April 5, and have their first home match Thursday, April 6 when Staples visits at 6 p.m.

The Panthers have their first conference match Monday, April 10, in the first of a home-and-home in a three game period against Newtown with a 6:30 p.m. road contest. Newtown comes to Monroe on April 12 at 6 p.m.
