Masuk players on co-op girls hockey team eye first win

MONROE, CT — The South West United hockey team, combining players from Masuk High and a variety of other schools in the area, got the season going in mid December.

The team fell 4-2 to Hamden in the Dec. 13 opener and 4-2 to Fairfield Ludlowe on Dec. 16, both at the Sports Center of Connecticut, then fell 4-3 at Stamford on Wednesday.

Captains are Amelia Manicke (Masuk), Jules Damon (Notre Dame-Fairfield), Francesca Buccieri (Newtown), and Katalyn Gelfand (Brookfield).

Other players to watch include returning goalie Jen Velky (Masuk) and Hanna Newman (2024 All Conference) and Grace Douglas, both from Lauralton Hall.

The team is striving to qualify for the Southern Connecticut Conference and State playoffs, Coach Corrado Perugini said.

Up next is a Monday, Dec. 23, visit from Guilford to Shelton at 2:15 p.m.
