Masuk Panthers finish season strong, head into playoffs

MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s baseball team finished its regular season with three consecutive wins, all shutouts, and carry some momentum into the postseason.

Coach Brian Hourigan’s Panthers are 10-10, a record that qualifies them for the Class L State Tournament. The Panthers will visit Bethel in the South-West Conference Tourney with quarterfinals on Saturday, May 18, at 3 p.m.

Here is a recap of the three wins this week:

Masuk 2, Immaculate 0: On Monday, May 13, at home, Justin Feinstein threw a complete game, three-hit shutout. He struck out nine and did not walk a batter. Justin Fanning and Chris Cascella scored Masuk’s two runs. Carson Falcone had an RBI double. Steve Curtin added a double and Chris Welch singled.

Masuk 1, Oxford 0: On Tuesday, May 14, in another home game, Jacob Mondo threw a complete game shutout, a one-hitter, striking out 11 while walking only one. Colin Hope tripled in the third inning and scored on a wild pitch for the game’s only run. Steve Curtin also added a single. Hope, Jersen Perez and Austin Couto all had stolen bases.

Masuk 4, Kolbe Cathedral 0: On Thursday, May 16, in Bridgeport, Justin Fanning threw a complete game two-hit shutout. He struck out 10 and only walked one. Dan Curtin walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch for Masuk’s first run in the second inning.

In the fifth, Evan Alderman singled, stole second and scored on a Colin Hope double. In the sixth, Jersen Perez scored all the way from second on a Dan Curtin sacrifice bunt. In the seventh Jackson Zylick tripled and scored on a Curtin single.
