MONROE,CT — Masuk High’s boys basketball team closed out the regular season with back-to-back road wins, defeating New Fairfield 60-59 on Wednesday and Joel Barlow 67-53 the next night.
The Panthers await the results of Friday night action between other South-West Conference teams to learn their conference playoff seeding and first-round matchup.
In the win over New Fairfield, Tyler Newsom hit clutch foul shots with 16 seconds remaining to make the difference. Masuk scored 25 points in the final quarter.
Newsom led the way in his return to the lineup following a month of being sidelined, scoring 19 points to go along with seven rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a pair of steals.
Ethan Palma scored 14 points and had five rebounds, two assists and four steals.
Colin Francisco logged a dozen points. Mitch DeBernardo scored nine and had seven rebounds, five assists and six steals. Alex Simoulidis added six points.
In the Barlow game, Newsom poured in 29 to account for nearly half of Masuk’s scoring. Palma dropped in 17, Francisco had 10 and DeBernardo added seven.
The SWC playoffs are scheduled to get underway Friday, Feb. 23.
