Masuk grappler Frank Sampieri posts win in tough matchup

Masuk wrestler Frank Sampieri, right, won his bout in the 152 weight division in a match against Newtown Wednesday night.

NEWTOWN, CT — Masuk High’s wrestling team had one of its toughest matches of the season on Feb. 2, visiting South-West Conference rival Newtown which is unbeaten in the SWC. Newtown came out on top 69-12 but Masuk’s Frank Sampieri posted a win via pinfall.

Sampieri pinned Andrew Corey in 1:13 to win the 152 pound weight division.

Both teams picked up forfeit wins in some of the weight classes. Masuk competitors were Gianna Silva in the 126 division, Nate Videira at 132, Luke Longo at 138, Max Busa at 145, Dan Dutkowsky at 160, Evan DeLeo at 170, Will Alvarado at 195 and Ed Medaris at 285.

The Panthers are preparing for the postseason, which gets underway with the conference championships Saturday, Feb. 12, at New Milford High. The day-long tourney begins at 9:30 a.m.
