Masuk girls swim team wins first meet, piles up postseason qualifiers

MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s girls swim and dive team rolled to a 97-74 win over visiting Stratford in the season opener Thursday. The Panthers sealed the team win and exhibitioned the final two events.

The team had 16 qualify for the South-West Conference Championships and eight more for the State Championships.

“They’re happy. They got the win. It’s a good way to start the season,” Masuk Coach Emily DeMace said.

Masuk began the meet with a win in the 200 yard medley relay event as the team of Lena Savkovic, Lucia Morales, Abby Kirberger and Izzy Murzinska finished in 2:04.05, five seconds ahead of Stratford’s top relay.

Stratford won the 200 freestyle relay, but Masuk earned key points with Betty Glus finishing second in 2:25.76, Laney Stilway third in 2:29.47 and Tierney McGunnigle fourth in 2:35.13.

Masuk took the second and third spots in the 200 individual medley race as Kirberger made her final touch in 2:52.53 just ahead of teammate Stella Oliviera with a time of 2:52.85.

Morales won the 50 in 26.68; Skye Eannotti was third in 29.22.

Carly Jordan won the diving competition with a score of 186.10 and Eliza Palmieri was second with a score of 163.80. Both divers are among the SWC qualifiers.

Kirberger was second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:13.97; Stilway was third in 1:22.43.

Savkovic and Murzinska went one-two in the 100 with times of 59.15 and 1:00.40.

Masuk’s top finisher in the 500 was third-place swimmer Eannotti in 6:22.85.

Masuk had the two fastest 200 free relay teams. Murzinska, Savkovic, Stella Oliviera and Morales was first in 1:55.28. The team of Stilway, Grace Sheppard, Glus and Ishani Tyagi was second in 2:01.78.

In the 100 backstroke race Savkovic was first in 1:04.98; Murzinska came in third in 1:08.68.

Morales had the fastest swim in the 100 breaststroke event with an exhibition time of 1:15.57.

The 400 free relay of Kirberger, McGunnigle, Anastazia Malecka and Eannotti had the second-fastest time with a 4:51.08.
