MONROE, CT — It has been a strong beginning of the season for the Masuk High girls soccer team — unbeaten in its first five contests. Masuk, following a 1-1 tie with visiting Pomperaug under the lights on Tuesday, has a record of 2-0-3.
Pomperaug held a 1-0 lead for much of the night, until Alex Cecchino, assisted by Ella McGee, knotted the score late in the second half. Multiple impressive runs by McGee in the final minutes created scoring chances to no avail, but the Masuk Panthers were content with the draw after falling behind early.
“They were tremendous. They never give up,” Masuk Coach Katy Kreiner said.
Kreiner was pleased with her team’s defense. The back line of Tati Fabryk, Emily Poole, Julia Hourigan and Abby Yeager, and goalkeeper Kara Leandres have held the opposition in check from the start of the season.
“They definitely held strong,” the coach said.
Masuk shut out Joel Barlow 3-0, played Weston to a scoreless tie, edged New Milford 2-1, earned a 2-2 draw with tough nonconference foe Norwich Free Academy and contained a tough Pomperaug team (3-0-2 to start the year).
McGee and Brianna VanDerheyden have led the offense early on.
The Panthers welcomed youth soccer players from town to join them for the Pomperaug game. Girls and boys from various travel and recreation teams got to play on the stadium turf at halftime of the varsity contest.
Masuk looks to continue its winning ways in Thursday’s visit to Kolbe Cathedral at 4:30 p.m. The next home game is Tuesday, Sept. 24, when Stratford visits at 7.
