MONROE, CT — With a lineup loaded with experienced players, led by juniors and featuring a large number of underclassmen, the Masuk High girls basketball team is in a unique spot.
Not only are Coach Dan Young’s Panthers in win-now mode, they are building for the future at the same time.
“Goals for the season are to compete for division, conference and state title,” said Young, whose team advanced to the Class L State Tournament quarterfinals before falling to familiar foe and South-West Conference Champion New Milford last year.
The Panthers’ captains are all juniors: Bailey Bajda, Grace Sheppard and Maddie Farrer.
“This team has come into the season working hard and focused to achieve their goals. They are all good kids that have been a pleasure to coach,” Young said.
“We are still developing as we have many new faces in the program and on the varsity roster. We are working towards building our identity as a new group, so that we can be our best this season,” the coach added.
Masuk tipped off the campaign Monday with a visit to Wilton and came out on top 48-41 as Sheppard had a career high 20 points, Bajda scored 14 and Farrer added 10.
After visiting Staples of Westport Friday, Dec. 20, at 7 and going to Brookfield Friday, Jan. 3 at 6 the Panthers have their first home game. Immaculate of Danbury comes to Monroe Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 7 p.m.
