Masuk girls basketball team rides defense in comeback victory

Grace Sheppard dribbles the ball during a 58-44 win over Wilby on Jan. 8. Sheppard scored seven points in a win over Newtown on Monday.

MONROE, CT — Masuk High’s girls basketball team overcame a 10-point halftime deficit to defeat visiting Newtown 38-34 on Monday night.

Masuk Coach Dan Young said stellar defense by Emma Troesser limited Newtown’s go-to scorer Sam Diaspro to three points and that pressure on the ball by Peyton Webb, Abby Troesser and Grace Sheppard, with great help defense by Bailey Bajda and Maddie Farrer, were keys to the win.

Masuk was down 28-18 at the half but held Newtown to just six points in the second half, outscoring the Nighthawks 13-3 in the fourth quarter to close things out.

Bajda finished with 15 points, Sheppard and Webb each scored seven and Abby Troesser had five.

Masuk bounced back from a 33-30 loss at New Fairfield on Friday and improved to 5-2 overall. The Panthers will host Kolbe Cathedral Thursday at 7 p.m.
