Masuk High’s girls basketball team had a busy week featuring a trip to the Hoophall Invitational in Springfield, Mass., last weekend and a nail-biting win at New Britain on Wednesday.
The Panthers lost 46-45 to Springfield International Charter School on a buzzer beater. Bailey Bajda had a standout game with 17 points, 19 rebounds and six assists; Maddie Farrer collected nine points and six rebounds; and Grace Sheppard logged nine points and four assists.
In the second day of the tourney the Panthers played in the third-place game against Gardiner of Maine and prevailed 48-38. Bajda recorded a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Sheppard had 16 points and six assists.
The Panthers returned to Connecticut to play three games in as many days. After falling 40-29 to host Bethel, a South-West Conference rival, on Tuesday Masuk went to non-conference foe New Britain the next night and came away with a 50-49 victory. Peyton Webb hit a clutch free throw for a two-point lead with 30 seconds left. New Britain missed a foul shot with five seconds to go and Masuk held on.
Bajda racked up 27 points, Sheppard had eight, Farrer six, Emma Troesser four, Webb three, and Abby Troesser three points.
Back at it with SWC action on Thursday the Panthers hosted Notre Dame-Fairfield in a battle of 8-4 teams and lost 49-41. The game was tied 22-22 at halftime and Masuk carried a 29-26 lead into the fourth before the Lancers put up 23 fourth-quarter points to come out on top.
Bajda scored 23 and Emma Troesser logged 11 to lead the Panther offense.
Masuk is back at it Tuesday, Jan. 28, when New Milford visits at 7 p.m.
