NEWTOWN, CT — The visiting Masuk High boys volleyball team defeated Newtown 3-1 (25-22, 16-25, 25-21, 25-21) in a late-season clash on May 17. This was a preview of the South-West Conference Tournament semifinals to take place Wednesday, May 22 in Newtown at 6 p.m.
“It was a great win. We know they’re a good team,” said Masuk Coach Hipolito Castro. “It’s going to be good competition.”
And the winner of Masuk-Newtown will face either top seed Joel Barlow of Redding or Pomperaug of Southbury in Friday’s championship match at the higher seed at 6 p.m.
“It doesn’t matter who we play. The teams are pretty even so it matters how you play that night,” Castro said.
Against Newtown in the May 17 match Masuk took a pivotal game three by jumping out to a commanding 15-6 lead. Newtown pulled to within two at 20-18, but key kills by Michael Majersky and Daniel Ferris helped the Panthers move to within one set win of closing out the match.
In game four Masuk jumped out to an 8-2 lead and withstood several Newtown runs to maintain the lead despite seeing it whittled down to just two multiple times. Majersky clinched the win with a kill.
Ferris finished with 22 kills and Majersky had 15 kills. Nate Kurkoski had 42 assists and eight digs. Nicky Adams recorded 10 digs and two aces, and Majersky and Ferris both had five digs.
