MONROE, CT — The Masuk High boys basketball team captured the Hardwood Holiday Classic Championship by defeating Greenwich on Friday and Bunnell on Saturday.
This tourney was to be hosted by Greenwich, but moved to Monroe due to a broken pipe at GHS.
The Panthers defeated Bunnell 70-66 in Saturday’s title game as Mitch DeBernardo scored 16 points, had 7 assists and grabbed 5 rebounds for MVP honors.
Oliver Irving registered 16 points, 6 assists, 5 rebounds and a pair of steals and made the All Tournament Team. Alex Simoulidis had 22 points, 2 assists and 4 rebounds and also received All Tourney Team accolades.
Steve Sentementes logged 4 points and 3 rebounds. Saijon Gavin had 4 points, 5 assists, 5 rebounds and 2 blocks. Chris Welch dropped in 8 points and grabbed 2 rebounds. Jayden Cassese provided good defensive minutes.
Masuk beat Greenwich 77-73 as DeBernardo led the way with 28 points, going 5-for-7 from 3-point land, dished out 7 assists, had 4 rebounds and came away with 3 steals.
Simoulidis scored 18 points, had 2 assists, and collected 3 rebounds. Sentementes scored 3 points, had 4 assists and grabbed 6 rebounds. Gavin scored 13 points. Chris Welch scored 9 points, had 5 rebounds and had 2 steals. Irving contributed 4 points, 7 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jaylen Africot added 2 points and a block.
