MONROE, CT — With six wins in eight matches it’s been a nice start to the season for the Masuk High boys volleyball team.
“Especially with all the injuries,” Masuk Coach Hipolito Castro said.
The Panthers had been without two outside hitters and most recently were without a pair of middle hitters, but have maintained their winning ways. That includes a 3-0 (25-10, 25-16, 25-16) win over visiting New Milford on Monday night.
Dan Ferris had 12 kills, four digs and four aces. Michael Majersky had eight kills and a trio of aces. Mathias Adaeh and Tyler Barringer both had five kills. Barringer added a pair of blocks. Andrew Oleyar logged four digs. Nate Kurkoski had three digs and 21 assists. Nicky Carvajal recorded three aces.
The Panthers have also beaten Xavier of Middletown, St. Joseph of Trumbull, Kolbe Cathedral of Bridgeport, Amity of Woodbridge and Bridgeport Central.
“They’re playing very well,” Castro said. “We’re passing, we’re hitting, we’re serving well. And we’re playing at a really high level.”
Masuk certainly was at a high level last season on the way to winning a state championship. The Panthers are looking for more of the same and only stand to get stronger when at full strength.
The Panthers have lost to a pair of traditionally tough squads, FCIAC foe Ridgefield and South-West Conference rival and perennial powerhouse Joel Barlow of Redding.
They will face Ridgefield again in a rematch at home on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. The Panthers will also have nonconference matches with Cheshire and Shelton to close out the month of April.
