MONROE, CT — A late, tie-breaking goal propelled the Masuk High boys lacrosse team to an exciting 7-6 season-opening win over visiting Newington on Saturday. A.J. Cavanaugh took a pass from Cole Henderson and deposited the game-winner with 3:34 remaining.
Henderson and Andrew Picci both recorded hat-tricks to help lead the offense. Henderson had a big day with three assists for six points, Picci assisted on two goals and Cavanaugh also set up a tally.
Max Viglione had five ground ball scoops and Kyle Riley and Picci had four ground balls each. Masuk goaltender Jake Kyle made nine saves.

Masuk led 5-3 at the half and was clinging to a 5-4 advantage heading to the fourth. Henderson struck just 34 seconds into the final stanza as Masuk regained its two-goal edge. Newington got the next two tallies to tie things before Cavanaugh finished off his opportunity after a sustained Mask possession on offense.
“It was definitely a battle. It’s the first game of the season, so I’m happy to get the win,” Masuk Coach Terry Stroz said.
The Panthers have a young lineup and some things to work on, but Stroz likes the effort.
“The kids don’t give up,” he said. “We have a very good work ethic.”
Masuk will have its first South-West Conference game Tuesday, at Notre Dame Prep starting at 5:30 p.m.
