MONROE, CT —- Three Masuk High School students won Silver Key Awards from the Alliance of Young Artists & Writers’ Scholastic Art and Writing contest, and another earned an honorable mention for his piece.

Superintendent Joseph Kobza and Monroe Board of Education Chairman David Ferris recognized the honorees, presenting them with certificates in front of proud family members at the board’s meeting in the Masuk media center Tuesday night.

“In 2024, more than 110,000 teens from across the U.S. and Canada entered more than 340,000 original works in 28 different categories of art and writing,” Kobza said. “These pieces were on display from January 13 through the 31st in the Silpe Gallery at Hartford Art School.”

The Connecticut Regional Celebration and Awards Presentation was held in the Lincoln Theater of the University of Hartford on Jan. 26, according to Kobza.

Silver Key Award winners include:

  • Olivia Neel, junior, for her self portrait in charcoal
  • Keira Rowley, sophomore, for her colored pencils piece: “The Center Flame”
  • Casey Cummings, senior, for her acrylic paint piece: “What Lies Beneath”

Masuk sophomore, Aiden Cronk, earned an honorable mention for his micro pens drawing of “Importance/Abhorrence: Eyeball Tickler, Now in 2D.”

Kobza said the Alliance of Young Artists & Writers is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, whose mission is to identify students with exceptional artistic and literary talent and present their remarkable work to the world through these awards.

  1. Congrats to our Masuk Artists. This is very impressive given the volume, talent and International scope of the competition our Artists were competing with. I hope after your works are done touring in Hartford, that they will go on a ‘Monroe/Fairfield’ County Tour of their own.

I look forward to seeing the works in person.
