Library of Things: A top shelf new service at EWML

Monroe Troop 63 Assistant Scout Master Jim Busa, left, and his son, Boy Scout Maxton Busa, present shelving for a library of things to Edith Wheeler Memorial Library Director Nicole Cignoli.

MONROE, CT — Edith Wheeler Memorial Library (EWML) Director Nicole Cignoli expressed her gratitude to Troop 63 Boy Scout Maxton Busa, 17, a Masuk High School senior, for choosing the library as the beneficiary of his Eagle Scout project.

Last May, Busa approached Cignoli and her staff about his plan to start a library of things. Coincidentally, EWML was in the early stages of doing just that, so after several meetings Busa agreed to build the display shelving.

The project took off as the new school year began. The library shared photographs from which Busa was able to design the display case. Lowe’s Home Improvement and The Home Depot in Derby agreed to Busa’s request for donations of supplies.

Busa oversaw seven fellow scouts, who performed five hours of construction at Monroe Congregational Church, with additional guidance from Scout Master John Goyette, his father, Assistant Scout Master Jim Busa, and project mentor, Sean Cornut.

“It was fun and stressful,” Maxton Busa said of the project. “We had a limited amount of wood and didn’t want to make any mistakes. We repeated the old adage, ‘measure twice, cut once,’ to each other throughout the build.”

Busa’s next steps will be to sort the donated items from the Nov. 10 donation drive and plan another drive in the spring.

“We can’t wait to load the shelves up,” said Gail Wood, head of technical services and one of the library’s project liaisons, along with Luca Bartlomiejcyzk, the adult and teen services librarian.
