MONROE, CT — Monroe will celebrate its 200th anniversary on May 23, 2023 and the Bicentennial Committee invites residents, community leaders and businesses to a forum this Wednesday, May 4, to hear ideas on how to celebrate this historic event.
The forum will be held in the Council Chambers of Monroe Town Hall at 7 p.m.
In 2023, Memorial Day weekend will kick-off a series of community events, followed by a “Bicentennial Summer” and more.
“We would love to hear some ideas from you about how you could help make this celebration memorable,” said Vida Stone, a committee member. “What unique perspective can you bring to this event that shares both the history of Monroe while celebrating our wonderful community of today? Are there activities, demonstrations, tours or other ways your group, individual or business can contribute to this celebration of the town we all know and love?”
“Let’s make history, celebrating Monroe’s history,” she added.
First Selectman Ken Kellogg established the Bicentennial Committee to guide the town in planning this celebration. Its members include Vida Stone, Dee Dee Martin, Lee Hossler, Paul Moyse, Kelly Plunkett, Amy Primorac, Brian Quinn, Terry Rooney and Dona-Lyn Wales.
Okay, so what has happened since then? Have there been subsequent meetings? I would think the Chamber, Historical Society, Woman’s Club, etc. would be rallying around this.
Yes John, they’ve been meeting. I was waiting until they’re further along before reporting on it again.
