MONROE, CT — Stepney firefighters recently visited Stepney Elementary School for Fire Prevention Month, teaching children about fire prevention and what to do in an emergency situation.
“We are grateful for the Stepney Fire Department’s volunteers, who came to our school to teach our students about Fire Safety,” Stepney Principal Ashley Furnari said.
Stepney Fire Lt. Samantha Kearney organized the event.
“It’s fun seeing their faces light up when we get out of the truck,” Kearney said of the children during an interview at the firehouse Tuesday. “I love their questions. Sometimes they’re something else,” she added with a smile.
One question a student asked last year was what to do if the fire alarm goes off while you’re going to the bathroom.
“We told them to finish up and come out as fast as they could,” Kearney recalled. “We weren’t expecting that!”
The town has three fire companies: Monroe, Stepney and Stevenson. Every October, firefighters from the three companies visit schools to talk to children about fire safety.
