MONROE, CT — First Selectman Terry Rooney celebrated the Masuk Softball team’s latest state title by honoring the players and Coach Leigh Barone with a proclamation before the Town Council’s meeting on June 24.

The top seed Masuk Panthers won the Class L State Championship with a 4-0 victory over No. 2 Ellington, at the University of Connecticut on June 8.

Prior to the title, the Panthers won the South-West Conference Championship in dramatic fashion when Ava Moretti smashed a walk-off, two-run home run over the left field fence at DeLuca Field in the ninth inning for a 6-4 victory over rival Newtown.

Chamber Golf Tournament

The Monroe Chamber of Commerce’s annual golf tournament will be held at Whitney Farms Golf Course, 175 Shelton Road in Monroe, on July 9. Proceeds will fund scholarships for deserving Monroe high school seniors and donations to Project Warmth.

Twosomes and foursomes are needed to play and the tournament needs more sponsors. Clarksons is the title sponsor. Donations of gift cards and prizes are needed for raffles. For information, click here.

A $175 tournament registration fee includes greens fees, a golf cart, refreshments, lunch and dinner.

Jam at the Dam

The highly anticipated Jam At The Dam Country Music Festival is coming back to Z-Topia, 1545 Monroe Turnpike, on Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27.

Attendees can look forward to a family friendly event with a variety of food trucks offering delectable treats and local vendor tents for a unique shopping experience.

Jam at the Dam will feature performances from outstanding of artists in a vibrant atmosphere.

Making captain

BEVERLY, Mass. — Conor Rooney, the son of Monroe First Selectman Terry and Nadine Rooney, was named one of the captains of the Endicott College Men’s Soccer team. The junior joins grad Tiago Frazao, and juniors Tim Lynch and Konrad Krysztoforski.

Rooney is a Masuk High School alum, who grew up in town.

While playing soccer at Endicott, he was once named CCC Rookie of the Week.

A 50 year reunion for Masuk’s Class of ’74

Masuk High School’s Class of 1974 is celebrating its 50th reunion at Testo’s Restaurant (formerly Roberto’s), 505 Main St., on Saturday, Aug. 31, from 7 until 11 p.m.

It will be a night of dinner, dancing, raffles and reminiscing with classmates. The cost of admission is $75 per person and the event includes a cash bar. RSVP no later than July 31.

Rotary Golf Tournament

The Rotary Club of Monroe’s annual golf tournament fundraiser will be held at Tashua Knolls Golf Club, 40 Tashua Knolls Lane in Trumbull, on Sept. 9. The title sponsor is L.A. Barnaby & Sons.

The tournament will start with a breakfast from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., a Shotgun Start at 9 a.m. and there will be a lunch and cocktails after playing golf.

Proceeds will benefit the Unified Sports Program at Monroe’s elementary schools. Registration information will soon be available.
