Big Truck Day
MONROE, CT — Edith Wheeler Memorial Library is hosting a Big Truck Day event in the back parking lot on Oct. 7, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Children can see, touch and climb inside different types of big trucks and go into the library’s children’s room for crafts.
The event will be held rain or shine, no registration necessary. The library is at 733 Monroe Turnpike.

Traffic impact report
Drivers can expect possible lane closures with alternating traffic and some delays in parts of town this week, according to the latest traffic impact notice issued by the Monroe Department of Public Works.
The following jobs will be performed from Monday, Oct. 8, through Oct. 22, weather permitting.
Top soil work will be done on Gay Bower Road, from Monroe Turnpike (Route 111) to Woodlawn Road.
Paving will be done on Georges Lane, from River Drive to the cul-de-sac; on River Drive, from Georges Lane to Turkey Roost Road; Cahill Road, from Georges Lane to Turkey Roost Road; and Copper Mill Road, from Georges Lane to the cul-de-sac.
Drainage work will be performed on Hillcrest Road, from Main Street (Route 25) to the fire access.
Utility work, drainage and road construction will be performed on Pepper Street, from Grant Road to the north end of Main Street (Route 25).
Domestic Violence Vigil
The Center for Family Justice invites the public to attend a vigil remember honoring the memories of the 31 lives lost in Connecticut in 2021 due to domestic violence. It will be held at the Hartford Healthcare Amphitheater, 500 Broad St. in Bridgeport, on Oct. 12 from 6 to 8 p.m.
The vigil is a free community event that will include government officials, domestic violence advocates and survivors, local church choirs, dance schools and musicians to bring a message of hope through song and dance.
Monroe Lions Shred Day
MONROE, CT — Residents can safely dispose of sensitive documents they no longer need during Shred Day, a Monroe Lions Club event to be held from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, Oct. 22.
The event will take place in the Rite Aid parking lot at 435 Main St., at the corner of Routes 25 and 59. Participants can watch an Oakridge Massive Mobile Shredder tear their boxes of paper to shreds.
The cost is $10 per box and copy paper sizes of 18 x 10 x 11 will be accepted. Larger boxes will be $5 extra. All money collected will be donated by the Monroe Lions Club to support local needs.
The Lions Club asks participants not to bring binders, binder clips, spiral notebooks or Pendaflex® folders.

Saturday, Oct. 29: The Legend of Hannah Cranna: Alleged Witch of Monroe, a family friendly event featuring tales by legendary storyteller Sue Selk, 2 p.m., 31 Great Ring Road. Nov. 6: The Shoreline Ringers: A Connecticut Handbell Ensemble at Edith Wheeler Memorial Library, 2 p.m. The ringers will teach the history of bells, techniques used when playing and perform songs is a show with audience participation. Tickets are limited and will be available soon.
Saturday, Dec. 17, The Shoreline Ringers: A Connecticut Handbell Ensemble at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 7 p.m. Featuring music, from Bach to the Beatles. Tickets are limited and available soon.
Dec. 2, 3, and 4: Christmas Fair, East Village Meeting House, 433 Barn Hill Road, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Christmas and holiday decor, new and vintage ornaments, wreaths, baked goods, Monroe historical collectibles and more.
