MONROE, CT — An applicant withdrew a controversial proposal to establish a Special Development District at 590, 600 and 604 Main Street, which would have enabled the filing of another application to renovate the front facade of Bart Center and construct a 21,000-square-foot commercial storage facility in back of the property.

A hearing for the Marketplace Square application opened on Jan. 16 and was going to be continued to March 6, before Planning and Zoning Administrator Kathleen Gallagher received a letter Tuesday from Jason Montagno, a professional engineer with Solli Engineering, on behalf of his client.

Gallagher read the letter to the Planning and Zoning Commission at its meeting Thursday night.

“The owner would like time to explore the potential for alternative site uses or concepts,” Montagno wrote. “Thank you for your consideration in this matter.”

Neighbors of an auto repair shop on the property, at the corner of Main Street and Bart Road, had complained about ongoing zoning violations by the business.

Those speaking at the hearing expressed strong opposition to the plan, especially due to the site’s close proximity to the West Pequonnock River watershed, which provides public drinking water, and the existing violations.
