Gab and Dab Paint Night
The Monroe Food Pantry’s second annual Gab and Dab Paint Night fundraiser, “Fluid Art,” will feature Monroe artist Susan Wernau, who will demonstrate two different fluid art pouring techniques.
The event will be held at the Monroe Senior Center, 235 Cutlers Farm Road, on Thursday, Feb. 13, from 6 to 9 p.m.
Participants will create two finished ‘8 x ’10 acrylic canvas paintings and light refreshments will be served.
Admission, which includes art supplies, is $35 and all proceeds will benefit the Monroe Food Pantry.
Twenty-five spots are available. Those wishing to attend should RSVP by Thursday, Feb. 6, by calling the Food Pantry at 203-452-2817 or emailing the Monroe Food Pantry Committee at [email protected].

Christmas tree pickups
The Monroe Highway Department will begin picking up Christmas trees on Monday, Jan. 13. Residents must have their tree at the curb by 7 a.m. Trees should be free of all accessories and should not be bagged.
The Highway Department will complete the tree pick up on Friday, Jan. 31. It is not necessary to call for an appointment.
Residents also have the option of taking their Christmas tree to the Garder Road Landfill, 211 Garder Road, free of charge on Fridays or Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Ice fishing and more
The Monroe Parks and Recreation Department is offering a new ice fishing class this winter, as well an ArtSmart! Studio and floor hockey.
Ice Fishing: Learn the basics of this fun, wintertime sport. Class will cover safety, equipment and techniques. Graduates will be invited to attend an ice fishing field trip.
This program is free and registration for each participant is required. The class is offered Tuesday, Jan 21, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Location: Monroe Senior Center, 235 Cutlers Farm Road.
ArtSmart! Studio – Friday Night Art Escape (ages 10-14): This workshop series provides a great opportunity to socialize in a nurturing setting with other creative minds and offers sophisticated projects sure to please.
It meets Fridays from 7 to 9 p.m.: Jan. 10 is Monogram Decoupage (handmade papers and washi tape collage); Feb. 7 is Pop Arts Hearts (carved block printmaking); March 6 is Earth Abstractions (acrylic, sand and sea glass on canvas).

Floor Hockey: In conjunction with CT Sports Network, Parks and Recreation will offer a new floor hockey program for children in kindergarten through grade 8.
Players will learn a popular sport in a fun and enjoyable environment. Along with individual development, players will also learn teamwork and rules. Staff will strive to provide the best experience for each player, while teaching the fundamentals of floor hockey.
The program will be held Friday nights at the Monroe Elementary School gym, 375 Monroe Turnpike. Session 1 is Jan. 10 through Feb. 7. Session 2 is Feb. 21 through March 20.
Kindergarten through third grade meets from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and grades 4-8 meet from 7:45-8:45 p.m. Fees per session are $75 for residents and $85 for non-residents.
