STRATFORD, CT – Tony Afriyie, the Democratic nominee for the special election to fill Connecticut’s 21st Senatorial District seat, has met requirements for the Citizens’ Election Program.
A first-time candidate for state office, Afriyie raised over $14,000 and received contributions from over 225 residents within the district, which includes Shelton, Stratford, Monroe and Seymour. By demonstrating public support for his campaign, he will receive a state campaign finance grant.
“I am grateful to the hundreds of people all over the district and state who believe in our vision for a fairer, more affordable Connecticut and who helped us reach our fundraising goal in just one week,” said Afriyie.
“I’m running to bring a fresh perspective and innovative ideas to our state government, and our strong fundraising shows that our campaign is already resonating,” he continued. “Now, we can focus on spending the next 33 days sharing our message with the voters of the 21st District.”
Afriyie is running against State Rep. Jason Perillo, R-Shelton, who secured his party’s nomination. The special election will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 25, with four consecutive days of early voting beginning Thursday, Feb. 20.
The seat became available following the resignation of longtime Republican senator and former senate minority leader, Kevin Kelly.
