A sharper focus on math should add up to a successful year at Jockey Hollow

Jockey Hollow Middle School Principal Julia Strong says certified math specialist, Nikole Newman, is a welcome addition the school’s faculty, who could factor into a higher level of performance among its students.

“Nikole Newman joins us from Region 9 and we are grateful for her presence to help us provide the support our students need to be successful at math,” she said, while greeting parents driving their children to school Friday morning.

“We identified math as a priority and the Board of Education supported and funded the new math specialist at the middle school,” Superintendent of Schools Joseph Kobza said.

In addition to providing support for all of Jockey Hollow’s math teachers, Kobza said Newman will participate in classes and pull kids out to work with them during intervention time.

“We think it’s going to have a really positive impact on math instruction,” he said.

Vehicles moved smoothly through the parent drop off lane Friday morning, but the bus lane was blocked by a flock of waddling Canada geese.

“They’ll move,” Strong said, soon before the flock started moving onto the side lawn as a line of yellow school buses turned up the driveway from Fan Hill Road, allowing the school to start its day as efficiently as day one.

“Yesterday was a wonderful first day of reconnecting students to school,” Strong said. “We spent part of the day issuing Chromebook’s to every student. We’re so grateful for the financial support of our one-to-one Chromebook initiative, which helps us keep students safe and secure during online learning and focused on the task at hand.”

As the summer comes to an end, Strong said everyone seemed ready to come back to school on Thursday.

“I think the excitement of back to school overrode the sleepiness some felt with their early wake up time,” she said. “Our fine faculty has once again created a warm and welcoming back to school for all our students. They did an awesome job.”
