Community News: Cub Scouts earn Arrows of Light, March Madness, Coins-for-Change

Cub Scout Pack 162 awarded Arrow of Light patches to scouts during a blue and gold ceremony at Great Hollow Lake.

MONROE, CT — A global pandemic could not stop eight members of Cub Scout Pack 162 from earning their Arrow of Light patches.

Jack, Aidan, Lukas, Bryson, Peyton, Will, Matthew and Collin received their patches during a blue and gold ceremony at Great Hollow Lake on Saturday, March 20.

At a time of few in-person meetings amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the boys spent the last year working hard with their den leaders over Zoom to achieve all of the Arrow of Light requirements.

Over the past five years, the scouts hiked, camped, participated in multiple Pinewood Derbies, performed community service activities, first aid and met outdoor adventurer requirements.

“For the oldest Cub Scouts, the Arrow of Light program offers 5th grade Webelos the opportunity to earn a patch that transfers to their Scouts BSA uniform. By earning this recognition, a scout demonstrates readiness for the next step on the boy scout trail,” according to boyscouttrail.com.

Coins-for-Change

Solar Youth Interim Program Director Candace Wright is thrilled to receive a check from Connex Credit Union as part its Coins-for-Change program.

Connex Credit Union donated nearly $500 to Solar Youth, a nonprofit organization with the goal of empowering urban youth to achieve lifelong success.

The funds were raised through Coins-for-Change, Connex’s philanthropic program that donates 100 percent of the fees collected at its coin-cashing machines to charitable organizations.

“Solar Youth is grateful to Connex Credit Union for its support of community nonprofits like ours,” said Candace Wright, interim program director of Solar Youth. “As a small youth development organization, every dollar helps us better guide our local youth on a successful journey into adulthood.”
