MONROE, CT — A local man was charged with DUI following a two-vehicle-accident on Monroe Turnpike Saturday evening.
Sanjit Basak-Smith, 27, of 607 Main St. in Monroe, was charged with operating under the influence and following too close with an accident. He was released on $500 bond for a June 3 court date.
At approximately 5:42 p.m., officers responded to a call about a motor vehicle accident on Route 111 after, police say, Basak-Smith rear-ended a Honda Santa Fe, while driving a Subaru Outback.
During the course of the investigation, police said officers observed that Basak-Smith had an open beer bottle in his vehicle, his speech was slow and slurred, and a strong odor of burnt marijuana was emanating from inside the Outback.
A search of the vehicle found a small glass smoking pipe with marijuana residue, according to police.
