Town firefighters used ladder trucks to raise a giant American flag over Main Street for motorcycles to ride under when the CT United Ride roared through Monroe Sunday afternoon.
Thousands of riders participate in Connecticut’s largest annual 9/11 tribute honoring the victims and heroes who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks 18 years ago.
Ceremonies started at 10:30 a.m. and the ride began in Norwalk at 11:30 a.m., rolling through several towns, including Monroe, before ending at Seaside Park in Bridgeport.
Stepney Fire Chief Michael Klemish said his fire company joined Monroe and Stevenson in purchasing a large American flag, which is flown at firefighters’ funerals, remembrances and the CT United Ride.
The flag was also flown when former Monroe First Selectman Thomas Buzi died nine years ago.
Klemish said fire companies paid tribute during the CT United Ride along the route in a variety of ways, from flying giant American flags to wearing turnout gear.
Thank you Bill Bittar for helping our town and especially with our memorial to those lost on 9/11.
