Aldi reopens Monroe location after crash into building

Damage is boarded up from Saturday's crash into Aldi's building.

MONROE, Conn. — Aldi reopened Sunday after temporarily closing its store at 201 Monroe Turnpike Saturday afternoon when an elderly customer crashed her Mercedes into the building, on the left side facing the parking lot.

Monroe Police Chief Keith White said the 82-year-old woman accidentally struck the side of the supermarket at approximately 3 p.m. on Saturday,

“It was significant, noticeable damage requiring both the building and the health departments and the Monroe Fire Department to respond due to electrical wire exposures caused by the collision,” White said. “There were only minor injuries to the driver and nobody else was hurt.”

White said the cause of the accident is still under investigation, adding the town’s building and health departments were working with Aldi’s management to reopen the store.

“They have shore up the building to make it safe,” he said earlier Sunday.

The supermarket reopened at 1:30 p.m.
