Monroe Police sniff out suspect accused of harassing texts

MONROE, Conn. — A Monroe woman was working out at a CrossFit gym last summer, when she received a text saying, “someone wants to buy your workout socks.” She ignored it, as well as several other unwanted texts she received from a bunch of different phone numbers, until she received a text saying, “let’s sniff those socks after your softball game.”

She found this weird, because she just finished playing in a softball game, police said, adding she believed whoever was sending the messages knew her schedule. She filed a complaint with police on Aug. 17.

Detectives applied for five warrants for the phone numbers to trace it to a suspect and found accounts with details meant to obscure his identity, according to the report.

Eventually, detectives were able to link the information to an Apple account, which appeared to be the personal account of a Trumbull man.

Detectives obtained photos of the suspect and asked the victim if he looked familiar. On March 5, she told police she recognized him, but could not recall any direct interactions or extensive conversations with him.

The next day, the suspect, a 38-year-old Trumbull man, came to police headquarters to speak with detectives. When confronted with details from their investigation, police said he was embarrassed and admitted to the texts, saying, “it was me.”

He told detectives he recognized the victim in town and followed her on social media.

Police applied for a warrant charging him with disorderly conduct and second-degree harassment and he turned himself in Thursday. He was released after posting seven percent of his $25,000 bond for an April 6 court date. As a condition of his release, he was instructed not to contact the victim in any manner.
